During World War II, the U.S. Navy deployed and operated high-speed torpedo boats, the ELCO 80-foot PT boats. Developed by the American Electric Launch Company, these patrol torpedo boats were the largest type used by the U.S. Navy during the war. Measuring 80 feet in length, displacing 51 tons, and powered by three Packard gasoline engines, they could reach speeds of 41 knots. A total of 326 were built, serving in the Pacific and Mediterranean. Notably, one of these was PT-109, commanded by future U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
